Mission Our classroom math program is to promote meaningful learning for all students through a comprehensive curriculum. Our program is committed to maximizing the learning of mathematics in which students are engaged in the process of making sense of mathematics, developing conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts, application of strategies for solving meaningful problems, and working as a community of learners.
Math Instructional Model Our math instructional model is based on the Math Workshop Model. The elements of the Math Workshop Model of instruction include: Daily Problem Solving; Mental Math; Mini-lesson, Differentiated Small Group Instruction and Application with Station Activities; and Reflection Connections. Our state standards dictate the curriculum and instruction scope of mathematics. The learning environment is based on investigative exploration of mathematical concepts that builds conceptual understanding before proceeding to the procedural process.
Social Studies and Science Our social studies and science concepts are taught in the form of study units and are integrated into the language arts and math curriculum. Second graders learn through an array of strategies, such as projects, experiments, and community-building activities.
In social studies, we teach the children about citizenship, communities, landforms, geography, and economics. Children are also exposed to an overview of American history and learn about specific American heroes.
Through our science curriculum, the children learn about earth science, life science, and physical science. Our STEM Lab uses the New Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to provide the children with an environment that facilitates hands-on experimentation and engineering of robots, marvelous machines, and other tools to make our work easier in Industrial Engineering.
Language Arts
Language Arts Literacy Mission Statement The Cedar Grove Language Arts Program (Journeys) establishes a foundation for lifelong learning and effective communication. Through a sequential and challenging curriculum, our students will become proficient readers, effective writers, active listeners and articulate speakers. Students learn to respect various points of view while displaying creative, collaborative, and critical thinking skills. The Language Arts Program enables our students to participate effectively in a technological, complex and ever-changing world.
Course Description The second grade language arts curriculum prepares students to achieve their maximum potential in language arts literacy through exposure to quality children’s literature in a wide variety of genres from which grade-appropriate strategies and skills are specifically taught.
